Kitchenware Records was formed in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1982 by Keith Armstrong, Phil Mitchell and Paul Ludford. It sprang from a once-in-a-blue-moon club they started called The Soul Kitchen which hosted the likes of Aztec Camera, The Fire Engines and New Order. Their somewhat unconventional playlist extended from The Velvets through Orange Juice to Parliament and a Soul Kitchen night would often feature a film show or a photo gallery rather than a support act.
